Conventionally, the company house is a location where staff of an organisation get together at the close of the workday or over the weekend to unwind and shoot the breeze. Generally the workers lived in a company town so the company house served as a combination neighbourhood focal point club house, and a location for good music and recreation. The atmosphere was pleasant, the food good and familiar and the music dead-on for the period and season (whatever that was).

There are few company towns left and you probably don’t live in one but we still need the warmth and camaraderie you find in a company house. A chance to sit back, relax and let tension seep out.

The Company house is a delightful place to be found at 2202 Gottingen Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Mary Ann Daye the proprietor descends from miners who lived in company towns and expended time of leisure at company houses. She maintains she opened The Company House as a tribute to her father, grandfather and great grandfather.

The Company House which was formally opened in January of 2009 was one of the venues for the 4th annual In the Dead of Winter Music Festival. Interestingly, volunteer work was essentially what got it ready in time.

The Company House is first and foremost a place for great music. There is a listening room where singer songwriters are presented. At the company house most music types can be offered. The possible exceptions to this are punk music, hard core and indie rock.

At The Company House, it is possible to drop in on a local cultural event as fundraisers, meetings and many other different types of occasions are hosted in the welcoming atmosphere.

The Company House provides a wide variety of delectable appetizers and beers, in addition to many vegetarian foods and chutney.

The Company House -CoHo- was recently shortlisted and awarded with an East Coast Music Award as the Venue of the Year, 2010 at the annual Industry Awards Brunch in Sydney on March 6, 2010. The members of ECMA who are managers, promoters, musicians and other professionals voted to select The Company House.
