The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is the national regulatory body in Nigeria concerned with the registration of food, medical devices, cosmetics, drugs, agrochemicals and other similar products in Nigeria.
At the completion of the registration process, a NAFDAC Registration Certificate is given to the applicant indicating authorization to market the product in Nigeria while the product is assigned a NAFDAC Registration number which is unique.
What is NAFDAC Registration Number
This is an exclusive number given to a particular product by NAFDAC in Nigeria. This in actual fact confers the holder of the registration certificate with the right to market the product in Nigeria.
Also the Registration number on a product enables the users or consumers have confidence in the excellence and efficacy of the product.
The registration number is made up of a prefix and a suffix. The prefix refers to the class or type of product while the suffix is serially allocated.

What is the Validity of NAFDAC Registration in Nigeria
The normal registration certificate usually remains valid for a period of five years.
There are other types of authorizations which NAFDAC gives such as listing (duration 2 years) or Global Listing of supermarket items (duration 1 year).
Products are listed for different reasons such as when the data on the drug or other product is not enough for NAFDAC to authorize its sale for an extended period or sensitive products on which national drug surveys have not been conducted.
Overview of the Registration Process of NAFDAC
The Registration process is regarded as a burdensome procedure by all who have contact with NAFDAC.
The Agency claims a NAFDAC number can be gotten in 2 months but in truth it has been known to last up o one year.
The stumbling block is usually documentation. The best way to go about getting a NAFDAC number is to collect all the required documents beforehand and be proactive in asking questions.
How to register a product with NAFDAC
First, obtain the required documents including Power Of Attorney, Certificate of Business Incorporation in your country, Certificate of Manufacture and Free Sale or Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product ( whatever document that says you can sell the products freely in your country) , Comprehensive Certificate of Product Analysis, Certificate of Business Incorporation, Certificate of Registration of Brand Name/ Trademark, Completed Application Form, Application Letter for Import Permit.
Buy a form, submit the documents and pay the fees that would be given,.
Secondly obtain an import permit authorizing you to import registration samples registration.
Thirdly submit the samples for vetting with a letter inviting the agency to come and visit the manufacturing facility and a copy of the permit given to import samples, certificates of analysis and receipts of fees paid.
Fourthly, the products are analyzed by the NAFDAC laboratory and all the documents are reviewed.
The Fifth and final step is the Product Approval
A series of meetings is conducts at different levels in NAFDAC where the history of the product including safety reports, documentations and test results are reviewed. Once the product scales through a NAFDAC number is assigned to it.
Is is necessary and advisable that you register your products with NAFDAC prior to selling as it is one of the few Nigerian institutions with bark and BITE.

You need a technical person to register products with NAFDAC. A scientist - could be a holder of a degree in Microbiology, Bichemistry, Food Tech, Pharmacy, Pharm. Sciences etc.

Maybe you should consider taking a job with a manufacturer of a cosmetic product that has a NAFDAC Registration Number.Even at minimum wage.

@Chidinma, if you are just making for yourself, you do not need NAFDAC registration. But if you want to label, package and distribute, then NAFDAC registration number is important.

Yes Ufuoma, you need the documents for NAFDAC product registration. Get the trademark registered first and then liase with the manufacturer. It makes the registration process easier.
@Andyfang - Contact your embassy. Getting a consultant/agent is a very important business decision.
You also need an ironclad legal agreement and the protection you will get depends on your level of investment.
If you remain in your country and the local agent does all the documentation, he could register the trademark and product under his own name, in the case of any dispute, he will get another manufcturer to produce the product for him.
I suggest you incorporate a coy in Nigeria and do the dasics yourself or have a joint coy with your agent.

To export Agricultural commodities you need a certificate of free sale by NAFDAC Export(PID) office in Yaba, Lagos.
For manufacturers whose plant NAFDAC has info about, it takes about 2 days, for others a little longer.
They say there is no charge in the spirit of encouraging non oil export

The NAFDAC Registration Certificate has a validity of 5 years, so they expect your agreement to last at least as long as the Certificate.
If you want to do business in Nigeria then you need to be in Nigeria or have a Nigerian representative or Coy to process it.
Think about it, if there is a legal or ethical problem with the product, someone in Nigeria needs to be held accountable by Nigerian law.

Godfrey thanks for visiting again. Pl check www.nafdac.gov.ng for a full list of the requirements for wine registration. The cost is N750,000 but you need to sort out the documents first before talking about a sample. You need to register the trade name and go through a legal check in NAFDAC prior to sample submission and analysis.

Nnenna, NAFDAC registration for locally manufactured soap which is a cosmetic will cost =N= 50,000 only. 30,000 for processing fees and 20,000 for the NAFDAC registration certificate. Please note that documentation, location and personnel are the most frequent challenges small scale (home based)local manufacturers face.
You need to register your business and tradename with CAC etc, you cant make the soap in your bedroom and you must have at least one technical staff even if you went for a training with an NGO and know all about soap making.

The basic requirements for NAFDAC registration for yogurt for include the water source and location. It can't be in a residential building and there must be a separation of rooms - raw materials, cloak room, toilets and refrigeration facilities.

It will cost you about N750,000 to do the NAFDAC Registration for a cosmetic. You need a company in Nigeria to do that. So either you own a Nigerian company or you get a local partner

Sorry Tomilolagiwa, Christina and Adewale for not having replied sooner. Yes, Tomi you need a NAFDAC number. Chris and Ade pl see my answer to Didi's question above. You really need to have a company registered in Nigeria. After that there are some consultants who can process the registration for you.
Bear in mind that all they can mostly do is legwork. That is pick up forms and get them to you to fill and notarize etc.

Either you come to Nigeria, register a company and then approach NAFDAC,or you look for a Nigerian Partner and have a legal agreement.
Either way a legal company registered in Nigeria needs to contact NAFDAC. For the registration processing, there are some consultants that offer services to help with the registration, but all they do is mostly leg work.

@Kelly, as with most businesses it is usually agreed upon by both parties. If you are exporting a private label then the importer my undertake the payments as he can decide to shift to another manufacturer.
On the other hand if it is your brand name, then you may as well pay since you may appoint another distributor later.
