NAFDAC Registration of Products

The procedure for Registration of products by Nigeria NAFDAC Nigeria is stringent. That statement will be appreciated by anyone who has attempted to register a product.

Getting a NAFDAC Registration Certificate is no easy endeavor.

Although the present Director General of NAFDAC, Dr Paul Orhii is attempting to simplify the procedure, if you want to make it easier on yourself and avoid frustration, you must put all your documents in order before even going to NAFDAC.

This is essential to avoid stalling the process at a critical phase.

I recently registered a drug from India with NAFDAC, it took me 9 months to get the documentation that satisfied their requirements and six more months to complete the registration process. what stalled the registration post documentation was problems with labeling.

Labelling Requirement on products for NAFDAC Registration

NAFDAC of Nigeria insists that the labelling on products for registration must be informative and accurate. These are the minimum requirements you must have on your packagemust appear on the label.

(a) Name of Product – Brand Name or Common Name (where applicable), must appear in bold letters.

(b) Full Location Address of the manufacturer.

(c) Batch No., Date of Manufacture and Best before/Expiry Date.

(d) Net contents of essential ingredients in metric weight units in case of solids, semi-solids and aerosols and metric volume in case of liquids.

(e) The ingredients must be listed by their common ames in order of their predominance by weight unless the cosmetic product is standardized, in which case the label must include only those ingredients which the standard makes optional.

(f) The Label must contain directions for safe use where appropriate or necessary (on the information panel (IP) or on the package insert (PI).

(g) Any regulated product which is labelled in a foreign Language shall NOT be considered for registration unless an English translation is included on the label and package insert (where applicable).

(h) Provision for NAFDAC Registration Number.

Dear Bianu,

where I can download the form NAFDAC /1002 for registration of imported cosmetic product in Nigeria? Is it suitable also for detergents and cleaning products?

Please contact NAFDAC at nafdac@nafdac.gov.ng

@Igbonekwu - To register pure water, contacy NAFDAC in your state. The process is simple. You need the right equip and location. The cost of registration for local products is low.

@Noeah - Importation of fruit juice is banned. A possible exception is the juice of a fruit that is not available in Africa/Nigeria. Contact NAFDAC first. If you are registering under your own brand, what you need is a contract manufacturing agreement.

@nedch - NAFDAC says you should send mail givig as much info as you have. Go to www.nafdac.gov.ng or dg@nafdac.gov.ng

despite the efforts of Nafdac. some persons are still saling fake and adultrated products. eg: Ogunpa market in Ibadan Oyo State where you'll see fake brands of Dettol and other products that can cause health hazards.

Tayo, there is a NAFDAC office in PH. Check in the Federal Secretariat along Aba Road.

Odoko, the fact that a product has a valid NAFDAC Registration number does not mean it can be sold freely in Ghana. Check with the Ghana Food and Drug board for acuurate information.

Adriana you did not mention your country.

However, there are NAFDAC registered products from almost all the countries of the world so there must be a way around it.

I think you should contact the Special Duties Division library@nafdac.gov.ng or Import Directorate ports@nafdac.gov.ng

Let me know how you get on with the NAFDAC Registration

Hi, Bianu

Thank you for posting this. It´s of great help. I am working for a sugar candy manufacturing company and we have been trying to get documents ready for this Nafdac registration. We were told that free sale certificates had to be consularized by either the British embassy or Nigerian embassy. In my country, we only have the British one but they refuse. How can we deal with this predicament? Would consularizing in Argentina (country that has relations with both my country and Nigeria) be enough to go through with the process? Thanks in advance for your deeply appreciated help.

@cojocariviorica, this is business and law, the issue of who pays for the NAFDAC Registration is something you work out with your partners. However it is important you stipulate who owns the Trademark in Nigeria.

@Adinnuebere, there are two types of diapers in the market. those with NAFDAC Number ( products authorized for sale in Nigeria ) and those without. The choice is yours. However NAFDAC Registration is not so tedious if you are able to get the Chinese company to do the documentation properly.

adinnuebere 5 months ago

dear sir, i want to import baby diaper from china to nigeria but the problem of nafdac registration is the stumbling block .secondly during the process of registering the product cant the product be in the market pls sir ur advice is highly needed

Hi

Remedy and Dandollar.

You need to register these products. The first step is to register your business with the Corporate Affairs Commission, then contact NAFDAC.

Since both of you have locally made the products the processing will be relatively easy for you. Contact the R &R Directorate of NAFDAC in Lagos or the NAFDAC office in the state where you live.

Dandollar, the NAFDAC no is unique for each product.

How does one go about importing Wine (white and red) into Nigeria? I know I need to get NAFDAC involved sooner or later but actually when do I get them involved? Do I need to also get the Customs people involved? Lastly, any idea how much I need to pay NAFDAC to get approved to import the wine and how long does the approval process take? Many thanks.

Hallo Bianu,

Nweke,

The most important thing you need is an approved location and to own the product trade mark. Since you are in Nsukka, I advise you to get in touch with NAFDAC in Enugu (at Federal Secretariat).

They will conduct a pre approval inspection of your site. Be sure they wont approve your mothers kitchen or fathers garage even if it is a 'cottage industry'

Registration of Locally produced items is not very cumbersome or expensive. (The cost is less than N100,000)

Let me know how you get on.

Comfort,

You need to register the product in Nigeria and get a NAFDAC number before you can safely market it. If you are doing MLM, then either the parent company or a group of distributors can do this. Visit the NAFDAC website or Sign up for Hubpages and ask me directly if you need further clarification.

I am an independent sales agent marketing Aloe Ferox tonic in southa africa and will want to also market the product in Nigeria. What must l do and what are the requirements l will need in other to market my product in Nigeria.

Yes, Chioma. You need the Cert of Manufacture and free sale. What it simply means is this. NAFDAC needs a document that will show that the product is sold and used in the country of manufacture. They dont want an 'for export' only product.

Let me know how you get long and ask me any other questions

chioma 16 months ago

please am interested in importing a drink and i dont know how long it will tak.the product is from europe and the company insists that they may not be able to give me the certificate of manufacture.do i need it
