Vintage Nigerian Hairstyles - Will they be the Nigeria black hair styles in 2012

By

Nigerian Hair Styles

Nigerian hair styles are fickle as all fashion usually is. There have been short hairstyles and long hairstyles. Some women base their whole look on permed hair while others detest chemicals and stick to natural black hair. But this much is certain, there are vintage hairstyles that are perennial.

Making the hair is an essential part of grooming and yet it is even more than that. the tugs and pulls and brushing has a calming effect on the mind. It was not for nothing that in some cultures you needed to give your hair a thousand brushes before you went to bed to sleep. The black hair is thicker and more resistant to abuse than most others and so lends itself to a very wide variety of styles.

Contemporary Nigerian Hairstyles 2011

In Nigeria cornrows, braids and weaving rule the hair fashion scene. they are done in elaborate designs arrayed in geometric patterns. The effect is always stunning even when no accessories are added to the hair. That is rare however in practice.

The most common Nigerian hairstyles involve braids and weaves accessorized with cowries, pieces of metal, beads made from every conceivable material from ivory to wood to bone. Colored rubber bands are also used sometimes to provide a cheerful burst of color. However those with the most striking African hairstyles for women are those who add a touch of vintage.

Vintage Nigerian Hairstyles

I came across an old Satin Sheen advert circa 1978. You can see it below. The women look so hip and cool . Their hair styles are an inspiration for any woman who wants to stand out far from the crowd with regards to her hair. Now that fashion and hair is becoming more and more unisex, it may even give rise to some new guy hairstyles.

Vintage hairstyles always look different and hairstylists say they are friendlier on the hair than all the perms and chemicals.

That's so lovely. Braids do take a long time, but they last longer and look so ethnic. Try them once in a while.

I am very into weaves. I was just telling my husband I'm going to get a new one. I like braids also but it takes soooo long. I noticed you talked about vintage fabrics. There is something special about vintage fabrics. The older I get, the more I appreciate them. They bring back memories. At one time, my hope was to fill my home with them but my brats, er, I mean lovely children would just ruin them. I may try to find some to use as drapes. I'm getting really tired of sheer contemporary panels.

Anyway, lovely article. I'm always looking for natural hairstyles that don't stress ethnic hair.

Beautiful advert and hairstyles. I once had my hair pleated into very thin braids while travelling in the Caribean, the hairstyle held on for ages despite the weather and "hardwear" and it felt fantastic. It only took about an hour for the lady to pleat my hair at the beach!!!

They really look great. I try to pick one aspect of a vintage hairstyle and incorporate it into my look. What do you think?

I am African and never tire to see the Art exhibited in our sister's heads day-in-day-out.
